The Academy Players team consists of Ali Simmons and Jack Gostelow:
Ali Simmons grew up in the South of England having played in a professional youth setup for his specialised years. Having strong family foundations helped Ali understand the value of education alongside trying to make it at the highest level as a player. This led to the prestigious Nationally ranked Hartpury College and eventually to an academic scholarship at Brunel University. It was at Brunel Ali combined his love of playing with coaching and after 3 successful years playing semi professionally and then gaining experience in the States Ali returned as Head Coach for the Brunel University women’s team and the later as the Men’s Head Coach in 2015.
Ali explaining his passion for working at Brunel University “I loved working with this group of players as not only could I relate being a former player at the University, but I understood these were well educated students who wanted to improve their craft and get to the highest level possible with the backing of a strong degree”.
During his time at Brunel University several of his players were offered professional contracts which is largely unheard of at the University level. During this role Ali met Jack Gostelow and instantly connected with their shared views on bespoke training for players and their vision for how to help develop players reach their maximum potential. It is not only our knowledge of the industry, but their genuine passion for helping develop players to be the best they can be on and off the field which makes The Academy Player unique. Ali moved to West Virginia to work in the prestigious University of Charleston program as an assistant coach at Dan Stratford, Ali helped the team to their first ever NCAA National Title and was part of the staff voted National Staff of the Year. On the back of this success Ali was offered a job as the first assistant at Barry University in Miami.
Jack Gostelow grew up in Ealing west London, playing in the academy system for 7 years. The pro game didn’t work out for him. However it opened a door to coaching at the age of 17. Taking on his younger brother's football team from a C team at under 11’s to county champions & regional league winners by under 16’s. Several players going on to play for professional teams / semi pro men’s teams before the age of 18.
This was done through trial & error of our current philosophy of advanced ball drills to improve decision making, technique & overall skill level. After the the successful season at under 16’s Jack met Ali & through sharing knowledge and ideas they formed a system for the Academy Player; to take players to the next level. Many players have gone on from the grass roots level to sign for academies, non-league and professional clubs using this unique system of training.
Jack is now working with players all across the south of England (any ability level) to improve them and take them to where they need to be. From under 6’s just starting out to premier league football players the passion for the game is what drives Jack forward day in day out.
